A man and a woman who left home drunk and locked their five young children in a house with a melted stove received one year and 2 months in prison each. The woman’s punishment will be deferred until her youngest child reaches 14 years of age.
The evidence collected by the Belokalitvinsky interdistrict investigative department of the Investigative Directorate of the Russian Federation for the Rostov Region was recognized by the court as sufficient to convict two local residents. They were found guilty of committing a crime under Part 3 of Art. 109 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (causing death by negligence to two or more persons), the department reports.
The tragedy occurred back in February 2023 in the Belokalitvinsky district of the Rostov region. The drunk common-law spouses left the house, locking the front door from the outside. Five young children were left unattended in the house, and the stove was lit, which led to the fire. The children could not get out and call for help. The criminal negligence of the couple led to the fact that as a result of a fire that broke out in the absence of their parents, two children – 3 and 5 years old – died, three more were injured and were taken to the hospital.
The court sentenced both the man and the woman to 1 year and 2 months of imprisonment each, to be served in a penal colony; for the woman, the actual serving of the sentence was deferred until the youngest child reaches the age of 14.
The verdict did not enter into legal force.
