In the Mexican city of Ciudad Madero (north of the country), the roof of a church collapsed on the heads of parishioners. The drama unfolded during communion. According to preliminary data, at least nine people were killed and another 50 were injured, AP reports.

Rescuers are clearing the rubble in the hope of finding living parishioners and clergy. It is not known for certain how many people attended the service.

Emergency services tried to lift the slab that had collapsed on the heads of parishioners using a crane, but this idea had to be abandoned because it could crack and collapse on survivors.

The rescue operation has to be carried out manually, sending groups of people under the slab supported by wooden supports to reach those trapped in the concrete.
