Scientists have proven the existence of an organ that is capable of living after a person’s death. This is the gut microbiome. This discovery was made by researchers at the University of Tennessee, writes Ecological Processes. The information is reported by the publication “Arguments and Facts”.
It is also called an “extracorporeal organ”, which is important for the functioning of the body, like the heart, brain, and liver. The microbiome consists of about one hundred trillion cells and weighs approximately two to three kilograms. Scientists have emphasized that this organ can live in a deceased body for several more months or even years.
Microbiome cells participate in the decomposition of the corpse and live even without oxygen. They can also interact with soil microbes that enter the body after the body is buried in the ground.
“It is not uncommon to see thriving plant life next to a decomposing animal, providing visible evidence that the body’s nutrients are being incorporated back into the ecosystem,” the paper’s authors said.
