The Swedish Academy granted on Thursday the Nobel Prize in Literature 2023 to the Norwegian playwright Jon Fossewhose works are among the most performed of all contemporary playwrights in Europe.
Fosse was awarded “for his innovative plays and prose, that give voice to the unspeakable”declared the Swedish Academy.
Jon Fosse was born in 1959 on the west coast of Norway. His immense work is written in nynorsk Norwegian (literally “New Norwegian”, one of the two official standards of written Norwegian) and covers a variety of genres including plays, novels, poetry collections, essays, children’s books and translations.
“Jon Fosse, winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature, is today one of the most represented playwrights in the world and increasingly recognized for his prose,” the Academy stressed. “The human condition is the central theme of Fosse’s work, regardless of gender.”.
The Nobel Prize in Literature is the fourth in the round of these prestigious awards, after the Medicine, Physics and Chemistry prizes were announced in previous days and on the eve of the Peace Prize being announced tomorrow, Friday.
