The number of prisoners in Russian correctional institutions has decreased by more than 2.5 times over the past ten years, RIA Novosti reports citing Deputy Minister of Justice of Russia Vsevolod Vukolov.
According to the Ministry of Justice, the number of convicts in colonies decreased from 700 thousand to 266 thousand people during this period. This significant reduction in the prison population reflects a downward trend in criminal prosecutions and increased use of alternative sentencing measures.
However, despite this decrease, the problem of recidivism remains relevant and requires further efforts for the rehabilitation and socialization of former prisoners.
