The president of the Canary Islands confirms the evacuation of more than 3,000 people due to the Tenerife forest fire


The president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has confirmed that 3,000 people have been evacuated due to the forest fire in Tenerife and that they have the help of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) since 3:00 a.m. this Thursday to treat to extinguish the fire. In an Informative Breakfast organized by Europa Press, Clavijo reported that shortly after 1:00 a.m., the president of the Tenerife Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, called him informing him that the fire had a perimeter of 92 kilometers and that it would be necessary the mobilization of the EMU. Since then, part of the populations of the northern municipalities of Santa Úrsula, La Orotava and El Sauzal have been evacuated, the most affected by the reactivation of the fire, which originated in summer but with the high temperatures and gusts of wind of the recent days it has been revived. The fear that the perimeter of the fire would get out of control led to requesting the help of the UME during the early hours of the morning, as specified by the president of the Canary Islands, who welcomes that the detachment located on the island was “fortunately” prepared to act from the 3.00 hours. “At least the night went well,” he added. Clavijo has expressed “with all the prudence that must be exercised in emergencies” that the fire “does not have to get out of hand again” and that, thanks to “the expertise and professionalism” of the civil protection services, security and emergencies, there is no need to complain about personal injuries. Regarding the return of the evacuated inhabitants, he expressed his wish that they could do so “throughout the day.”
