According to the current mayor of the Cauca town, Víctor Bonilla, the candidate, his wife, his daughter and two other people were injured by the terrorist attack.
“Armed individuals arrive at the house of a mayoral candidate and try to remove him from the residence. “They were chatting at a small family gathering, celebrating a birthday, and shots were fired, in which Mr. Albeiro Urrutia, his wife, his daughter and two other people who were there were wounded,” the president said in an interview with Contact News.
According to witnesses of the event, The candidate for Mayor of Puracé managed to struggle with the armed men who tried to enter his brother’s home, for which he received a shot in the shoulder. When the attackers fled, they threw the grenade at the house, causing injuries to those who were there.
According to Bonilla, the population is experiencing a delicate situation of public order with armed groups, since there is not enough presence of Public Forces to deal with this type of situation.
For her part, indigenous senator Aida Quilcué denounced: “Armed men have just shot and detonated a grenade in the home of the merchant Albeiro Urrutia. He, his wife and daughter are injured. Cauca needs urgent actions to help stop the conflict and the indiscriminate attack against the civilian population.”
After the attack, The victims were taken to a healthcare center in Popayán and they had to be escorted by police patrols to avoid a second attack against them.
“We do not know the motives, we are trying to establish what the causes of the attack are. We hope that in the course of the hours we will be able to know that information,” concluded Víctor Bonilla.
Although it is not clear who the perpetrators of the attack were, it is speculated that they were members of the General Staff of the FARC dissidentsa guerrilla that has devastated the department of Cauca.
The guerrilla stronghold under the orders of alias Ivan Mordisco has had intense combats with Army troops seeking to take control of the Micay Canyon.
In response to the military advance, the Central General Staff has attacked the civilian population, perpetrating terrorist attacks such as the one in Timba, where a car bomb was detonated in front of a Police station, leaving two people dead.
The guerrillas asked the national government to lower the intensity of the Army’s attacks to reach peace agreements, to which Defense Minister Iván Velásquez responded: “If they are in favor of peace, of cessation, then they should hand over the territory. “We are in a confrontation for control of the Micay Canyon.”
The head of the Defense portfolio told the subversive commanders to stop committing extortion, attacking the signatories of the peace agreement, putting pressure on human rights organizations and interfering in politics. However, With the attack on the candidate for Mayor of Puracé, the cessation of political intervention by the FARC dissidents is called into question.
