Finnish border guards used gas canisters against a group of migrants who arrived from the Russian Federation at the Finnish border point of Niirala. This was reported by the local television channel MTV3, citing the deputy commander of the border service of North Karelia, Samuli Murtonen.
“Border guards stopped a group of about 30 people who arrived on bicycles and tried to cross the border,” he explained.
According to Murtonen, border guards had to use force to stop the migrants because their orders were not followed. Thus, gas was sprayed toward one of the migrants to gain control over the situation. The people themselves asked for asylum in Finland. At the moment, the migrants have already crossed the border with Finland and are at the disposal of the authorities, the process of granting asylum is underway, the deputy commander said.
The day before it became known that the Finnish Foreign Ministry is preparing bills to completely close the border with Russia in case reducing the number of operating checkpoints does not help reduce the influx of migrants. The EU border control agency Frontex has announced its readiness to send forces to the border with the Russian Federation to prevent an increase in the number of illegal crossings.
