Algeria will ask the UN Security Council to be bound by the ICJ decision

Algiers, Jan 27 (EFE).- Algeria, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, called an emergency meeting for this Wednesday with the intention of this body adopting the decision of the International Criminal Court (ICJ) as binding. who this Friday requested precautionary measures to prevent Israel from committing genocide in Gaza.

The request for the convocation was taken on the instructions of the Algerian president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and the permanent representative of Algeria to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, had today the first meetings with international diplomatic missions, the official APS news agency reported.

“Ambassador Bendjama informed his counterparts of the Arab Group of the intention to convene, for next Wednesday, a meeting of the Security Council,” and announced that he will present a draft resolution before the organization “in light of the events in La Is”.

According to APS, Algeria began consultations with the member states of the Security Council – in which the US, Russia, China, the United Kingdom and France have veto rights – to “guarantee optimal preparation for this meeting.”

“It will constitute the first stone of a series of subsequent measures aimed at putting an end to the practices of the Zionist occupier who mistakenly believes himself to be untouchable and impregnable,” indicated the Algerian authorities.

The ICJ ruled this Friday on the procedure initiated by South Africa against Israel for “genocidal intent” in Gaza and saw the risk against a specific group, the Palestinians of the strip, as “plausible”, as well as “causing irreparable harm” to this group. with the offensive launched by Israel after the attack by the Islamist group Hamas on October 7, which claimed the lives of 1,200 people.
