The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, highlighted this Thursday the work of the United States in “pressuring” Israel on humanitarian issues within the framework of its offensive against the Gaza Strip against the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). ). “Everyone knows that the United States is an ally of Israel (…), but it is also true, and I can corroborate it myself, that there has been a lot of pressure from the United States towards Israel on different humanitarian issues,” he declared. Guterres during a press conference. In that sense, he has referred to numerous phone calls between US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resolve problems that the UN itself could not do on its own. “And I can also testify that there has been clear pressure from the United States to fully respect International Humanitarian Law,” added the Secretary General. The Israeli Army launched a ground and air offensive against the Gaza Strip as a result of the Hamas attacks on October 7, which left 1,200 dead and 240 hostages. Since then, the Palestinian authorities have reported the deaths of 27,800 Palestinians, in addition to another 383 deaths as a result of security force operations and attacks by Israeli settlers.
