Deportations of Central Americans fall 39% until June, according to official figures

San Salvador, Oct 4 (EFE).- Deportations to El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala fell by 39% in the first half of 2023, compared to the same period in 2022, according to official data collected by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) consulted this Wednesday by EFE.

The figures, taken by the IOM from government sources in each country, indicate that between January and June 2023, 80,480 deportations were registered, 51,440 cases less than the 131,920 counted in the same months of 2022.

Repatriations to the area known as the Northern Triangle of Central America during this period were 6,438 cases for El Salvador, while they reached 31,474 for Honduras and 42,568 for Guatemala.

The figures released by the IOM indicate that El Salvador registered a reduction of 32.5% of its repatriated citizens, while for Guatemala the decrease was 30.9% and 48.2% for Honduras.

Regarding the total number of returns to these three countries, 49,493 were from the United States, 30,618 from Mexico and 369 from other unspecified countries.

Deportations from the United States fell in general by 17.5% and in the case of Mexico they fell by 57.1%.

The figures presented by the IOM are from the General Directorate of Migration and Immigration (DGME) of El Salvador; the Guatemalan Migration Institute (IGM) and Social Welfare Secretariat (SBS) of Guatemala, and the Consular and Migration Observatory of Honduras (Conmigho).
