Archaeological conference dedicated to Old Ryazan was held at RIAMZ

On December 13-14, the Interregional Archaeological Conference “Old Ryazan – 200 Years of Research” was held at the Ryazan Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve. It was attended by archaeologists from Ryazan, Moscow, Lipetsk, Murom, Yelets, Kazan, Chersonese. This was reported in the press service of RIAMZ.

The discovery in 1822 of the first Old Ryazan treasure that entered the scientific circulation became a significant date for Russian history. After that, excavations began in Staraya Ryazan, archaeological research of other ancient Russian cities. Since 1968, the settlement has been a part of the Ryazan Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve. Every year, a joint expedition of RIAMZ and the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences works here.

The conference heard reports on the history of the archaeological study of Staraya Ryazan, the latest archaeological research of the Staraya Ryazan settlement, the archeology of ancient Russian cities and rural settlements.

The plenary session was opened by the staff of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who have been leading excavations in Staraya Ryazan for the past decades – Professor Alexei Chernetsov, as well as the head of the Staroryazan archaeological expedition Igor Strikalov.

The report of Igor Strikalov was devoted to hypotheses about the time of the founding of Ryazan. Until recently, it was believed that the city was founded in the XI century. The year was called when Ryazan was first mentioned in the annals – 1096th. Today, archaeologists, on the basis of many years of research on the settlement, attribute the emergence of Ryazan to the first half of the 11th century (about 1030).

Elena Bulankina, Head of the Sector for the Study and Museumification of the Old Ryazan Settlement of RIAMZ:

“Research results are sometimes controversial, ambiguous, but always interesting. Further accumulation and understanding of the material will help resolve many issues related to the life of medieval Rus’.

On December 14, a round table “Museum and monument of archeology: study and museumification. Pereyaslavl Ryazan. Problems of Reconstruction of a Medieval City. The discussion was attended not only by archaeologists, but also by architects and representatives of the Ryazan public.
