A nine-year-old boy was saved from dying thanks to the quick action of the specialists who work in the Cayetano Heredia National Hospital (HNCH)located in the district of San Martin de Porres. The little boy had to be hospitalized due to complications to his health caused by the bite of a house spider.

As reported by the Ministry of Health (Minsa) through a statement, the minor, with initials EBZ, “was referred to the Regional Hospital of Cañete ‘Rezola’ after presenting a picture of secondary acute renal failure” due to the arachnid bite.

Since he did not respond to the emergency hemodialysis sessions to which he was subjected to combat the spider venom that was affecting his kidney function, in addition to needing ventilatory support, antibiotic treatment and transfusions, the doctors at the aforementioned hospital saw fit for him to be transferred. to Lime.

Once in the capital, he was treated by a multidisciplinary team of doctors, made up of a specialist in pediatric nephrology, cardio pediatrics, intensivist pediatricians, pediatric infectious disease specialists, plastic surgery, and dialysis nurses.

According to the general director of Cayetano Heredia Hospital, Segundo Acho Mego, the life of the little boy, who was hospitalized for 10 days in the Pediatric Intensive Care Service, was saved thanks to the joint work of all the professionals of the institution.

“With a lot of effort we try to provide effective care, with the installed capacity of equipment we have. Our hospital, despite its limitations, faces many challenges from which it emerges successfully thanks to the problem-solving capacity of its professional team, made up of doctors, nurses and technicians,” said the director.

Meanwhile, the nephrologist of the HNCH pediatric unit, Reyner Loza, attributed this medical success to the fact that the hospital in question is correctly equipped to respond to any urgency or emergency.

In particular, he stressed that, for 20 years, Cayetano Heredia has had a UPediatric Dialysis Unitwhere the needs of the minor with loxocelism could be met and his life saved by providing daily hemodialysis for a period of 45 days.

“This emergency is caused by the loxosceles (type of hunting spider) that when biting inoculates its venom, which produces destruction of the muscles in the affected area, causing necrosis and production of a substance called myoglobin that clogs the kidney,” explained the The specialist indicated that every minute was valuable to prevent the child’s death.

Little EBZ entered the hospital on August 27. As his health condition became more complicated, he had to be admitted to the Pediatric ICU, from where he was out of danger on September 6, and then was admitted to Hospitalization. He was discharged a few days ago.

Reyner Loza explained that the spider that bit the 9-year-old boy was a Loxosceles laeta, popularly known as violin spider or corner spider. This type of arachnid is found in several homes in Latin America.

The venom of these spiders has a component that is sphingomyelinase D, which generates a series of damages to the body. “There are fatal cases that are fortunately the minority, while 85% only cause damage to the skin. 15 to 20% generate damage at a systemic level: extensive necrotic lesions, destroy red blood cells, renal tamponade, leading to the death of the patient due to acute renal failure,” said Leonel Martínez Cevallos, head of the Infectious Diseases service of the Archbishop Loayza National Hospitalto the Andean Agency.

After being bitten, approximately 4 to 6 hours pass before any injury is visible on the skin. This is very characteristic and is called “liveloid plaque”, having three conditions: necrosis in the center (black skin), ischemia around it (pale skin) and peripheral inflammation (red skin).

“An immediate symptom is kneeling and burning pain in the area, making it difficult to tolerate, so if the affected person is a child, they will most likely not only complain of pain but also cry,” Martínez specified.
