France concedes only one goal against Latvia in the first half and wins 8-55

Sports editorial, Oct 14 (EFE).- The French women’s handball team, current Olympic champion, conceded only one goal in the first half of the match that faced them this Saturday with Latvia, in the qualifying phase of the 2024 European Championship and in which Olivier Krumbholz’s team won by a resounding 8-55.

A devastating score that was not enough, however, for the French team to overcome the 48-goal lead (57-9) by which Hungary defeated Australia in the 2005 World Cup in Russia.

What no one can take away from the French, who already won a resounding 50-16 victory over Italy last Wednesday, is the fact of conceding only one goal to their rival in the first thirty minutes of play (1-26).

Suffocated by the aggressive 5-1 defense deployed by the French team, the Latvian team only managed to beat goalkeeper Laura Glauser on one occasion in the first half, who reached halftime with 90 percent saves, thanks to a goal at six minutes (1-5) from full-back Linda Krole.

The Baltic team would not score again until five minutes into the second half when the young winger Anna Stankevica established the momentary 2-31 on the scoreboard.

A result that seemed to relax France, which conceded seven goals to Latvia in the second half, which did not prevent Krumbholz’s team, among which winger Alicia Toublanc, author of twelve goals, stood out, from posting their best scoring record (8- 55) in an official match.

The win calls into question the decision of the European Federation to expand to twenty-four teams, eight more than in the last edition, the participants in the final phase of the European Championship that will be held in 2024 in Austria, Hungary and Switzerland.

A decision that has turned the qualifying phase into a real “ride” for the main continental powers, as reflected in addition to the 8-55 achieved this Saturday by France over Latvia, the 49-18 that Romania endorsed Bosnia on the first day or the 47-14 by which Spain beat Lithuania last Wednesday in Benidorm.
