A 26-year-old previously convicted resident of the Zernograd district was detained by law enforcement officers. A man at a car wash stole a car and decided to drive it home, but on the way he lost control and drove off the road. A criminal case has been initiated.
The owner of the vehicle reported the theft to the police. He said that he had come to the car wash in his VAZ 2115. The man briefly left the unlocked car with the keys in the ignition, and when he returned, he found that the vehicle was missing.
The police immediately drew up an orientation to search for the stolen car and handed it over to patrols, the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Rostov Region reports. The outfit of the State traffic inspectorate found the wanted car and detained the driver. It turned out to be a 26-year-old local resident, previously convicted of threatening to kill and illegal possession of drugs.
The detainee said that he was walking past a car wash and noticed a car with keys in the ignition. He checked that the car was not locked, made sure that there were no eyewitnesses, got into the passenger compartment, started the engine and went home. On the way, he lost control and drove off the road.
A criminal case was initiated against the hijacker under Art. 166 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Unlawful possession of a car or other vehicle without the purpose of theft.” The issue of choosing a measure of restraint for the detainee is being decided. The police returned the car to its rightful owner.
