Residents of an ejido in the municipality of Chicomuselo, Chiapas, clashed with elements of the Mexican Army and the National Guard after law enforcement came to review reports of clashes between members of the Sinaloa Cartel (CDS) and Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

The reports of these armed conflicts They occurred since last January 8, when it emerged that seven hours of shootings left 20 people dead, including two civilians.

The residents accused at the time that the structure of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, leader of the CJNG, would have control of the municipal seat after his hitmen placed checkpoints and left trucks crossed on the road.

They pointed out that neither the Army nor the National and State Guard were fulfilling their function of guaranteeing peace and tranquility for the population. Another shooting was reported on Monday, January 15.

For this reason, elements of the Mexican Army tried to enter the municipality this Tuesday; However, barbed wires placed by the residents prevented their passage. The inhabitants assured that these barricades were to prevent the entry of criminal groups.

“They are blocking the way to authority, it is our duty to recognize everywhere, to provide security to the community, to all of them equally. Which problem? The problem is you cowards, because you are afraid of two or three armed people. Cowards! For that they must unite,” a commander of the 101st Infantry Battalion of the Secretariat of National Defense and the National Guard is heard saying.

In the videos shared on social networks, protesters can be heard trying to calm the soldier down so they can talk and give their reasons for the blockade, but it did not happen. The situation became tense until a confrontation broke out with sticks, stones and tear gas that the federal forces threw at the residents.

According to the magazine Processthe events occurred on the morning of this Tuesday, January 16, and the soldiers were identified as members of the 101st Infantry Battalion of the Sedena and the National Guard.

Meanwhile, the Civil Society of the Town of Chicomuselo reported in a statement that several communities were fleeing that municipality before the entry of the armed forces.

“We urgently call on the international community to turn its gaze to our suffering people, not only because of the violence of organized crime, but now because of the attack by the armed forces who are violating civil society that has decided to protect their people by the growing violence and clashes between cartels,” the statement says.

They pointed out that hundreds of families from the communities of Nueva América, Corona del Rosal and Benito Juárez in the municipality of Chicomusuelo; Chejel and Puerto Rico from the municipality of Socoltenango; as well as residents of Nuevo Resplandor in the municipality of Concordia, are fleeing before the entry of federal forces, this because they are “violating the civil society that protects the life of their communities after a confrontation that occurred yesterday, December 15 January between cartels around 9 at night in this region.”

The residents questioned the federal forces as to why they do not protect the places where the drug cartels are located and free the roads that have been blocked for two years.

However, “they enter communities where people are organized to take care of their ejidos.”
