The MEP Manu Pineda has won the IU primaries to elect candidates for the European elections, given that the list he headed has obtained 64.89% of the vote (4,701) of the formation’s bases that have participated in this process, according to the provisional data released this Sunday. With a total of 7,245 votes cast, 40.55% of the total census that could participate in said primaries, Pineda’s candidacy has come in first place while the list championed by Marea Verde activist and IU activist, Marga Sainz , is the second most voted, with 21.04% (1,524) of the votes cast. The third candidate that participated in the process, led by the regional representative in La Rioja Henar Moreno, has received 12.81% of the votes (928) in these primaries, where there have been 1.23% of blank votes. . This Monday IU is scheduled to report the final results of its primaries. In this way, the predictions are fulfilled and Pineda is guaranteed to repeat himself as IU’s main candidate within the coalition list with Sumar, in which the distribution of positions for the next elections on June 9 has not yet been finalized. In the current European legislature, Pineda is attached to the group The Left in the European chamber. For Pineda, IU militancy has given an example of “democratic commitment” by participating in the primaries. “Today is a day to be very proud of our organization. A day to thank the militancy for their work,” he wrote in a message on the social network X after knowing the provisional results. Likewise, he has sent a hug to his colleagues. “Now we have to work to bring, together, from unity, the voice of the left to Europe,” he added. For his part, the Secretary of Organization, Ismael González, pointed out last Monday at a press conference that the formation aspires to maintain the same level of presence in the candidacy for the European Championships that it had in 2019, thus aiming to have two positions of output in the Add list. Of course, he also stated that he is aware that various left-wing formations must be integrated to have the broadest list possible and that also implies generosity. Of the rest of the formations that are part of the Sumar coalition formed in the last European elections, the ‘commons’ have proclaimed as their candidate the former deputy in Congress Jaume Asens while the Verdes Equo also elected their state co-spokesperson and former MEP Florent Marcellesi. For now, Sumar has not specified the person who will be the head of the list for the European elections and was currently focusing on specifying the programmatic aspects of the candidacy with his allied parties.
