The ancestor of all hybrids has been significantly strengthened in the fifth generation and has all-wheel drive

The symbol of automotive eco-madness has entered its fifth generation. And thanks to the powerful drive, it won’t be a lazy lemur.

Although the Toyota Prius is considered a symbol of all things evil among car enthusiasts, the commercial success of this hybrid cannot be denied. More than 5 million units of this car, which has been on the market since 1997, have been sold. The new generation of Toyota Prius continues the successful recipe.

It stands on the TNGA modular platform, which is also used by other Toyotas, and again has the most aerodynamic shape possible. Hopefully the sloping roof will not negatively affect the space in front and passengers of European body proportions will not have their heads in the ceiling.

As for the drive, in some markets the classic hybrid systems with engines of 1.8 and 2.0 liters will remain (their system power has increased to 140 and 199 hp, respectively). However, in Europe there will only be a plug-in hybrid, because, paradoxically, even an ordinary Prius will not fit into the corporate limit of CO emissions2 95 g/km and Toyota would be in danger of paying emission fines from Prius sales. Here we see how absurd it is.

The plug-in hybrid combines an atmospheric two-liter M20A-FXS and an electric motor, power is transmitted to the front wheels via a planetary gear system. But the Prius can also be a four-wheeler, when the rear axle is driven by an electric motor. The dynamic parameters are interesting, the plug-in hybrid Prius has a total output of 223 horsepower and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds.

Energy is stored in a battery with a capacity of 13.6 kWh, which should be enough for normal daily trips without the need to start the internal combustion engine. In some markets, it will even be possible to pay extra for a solar panel in the roof, which will help with battery charging, which is said to save the annual consumption needed to drive 1,250 km.

An interesting feature is the ability to record video in the front and back using the integrated cameras. In Europe, sales of the new Prius will start in the spring of 2023, but we have to wait for the prices.
