An “offensive against extortion”: the request of General William Salamanca to the new commander of the Police in Barranquilla

In response to the challenges raised, Benavidez announced a specific focus on the fight against extortion, strengthening teams and capabilities to hit these criminal structures. Furthermore, he stressed that under his leadership, priority will be given to the protection of children, women, disabled population and economically vulnerable communities.

In relation to requests for ‘The Black Ober’ to INPEC to reduce controls in exchange for stopping their criminal activities, General Salamanca reiterated that no person outside the law can condition institutions.

He underlined the total commitment and punctual instruction of the President of the Republic to confront any expression of criminality without respite towards criminals who challenge the institutions.

Several mayors and governors of the country brought forward their inauguration acts to begin work on January 1, 2024, and one of those who “threw the house out the window” was Alejandro Char Chaljub, popularly known as Alex Charelected president of Barranquilla, for the third time.

During his speech, Char highlighted part of what his efforts will be during his term in office, in which he plans to focus on bilingualism, infrastructure and attention to vulnerable groups in the city.

“I have prepared myself physically and mentally, because this is a very big commitment. The challenge is difficult, big and important, but we are more prepared than ever to take Barranquilla to another level,” indicated the president-elect.

Char referred to the work he is going to carry out, right in the area where he decided to carry out the act of possession, Rebolo. There he plans to build the Great Malecón de Surorienteon the stream that runs through the neighborhood, which has become a source of garbage, which has generated discontent among its inhabitants.

“This town in the southeast has a very important symbol for the people of Barranquilla, it has given us a lot of joy. What is needed, to suture this wound of the Rebolo stream once and for all, which is a monument to insecurity. More than 100,000 million will be invested in this space and it will be the turning point of the south east of the city. We have to die in peace fulfilling Barranquilla,” he added in his speech.

In his speech he was emphatic in stating that he wants to turn Barranquilla into a benchmark for bilingualism throughout Latin America. “Barranquilla is going to take the lead and we will be the first in Latin America,” said Char.

Regarding security, Char did not spare comments, adding that they are “armed to the teeth” and ordered the “criminals” to move to Paraguachón (La Guajira): “We are armed to the teeth, here we are going to give it all. “The bandits who go to Paraguachón”

To advance his security strategy, the president, who will take office on January 1, 2024, declared that two retired generals of the National Police will accompany Yesid Turbay, designated Secretary of Security, to combat extortion and other public order evils that disturb the tranquility of the people of Barranquilla. To do this, it will also rely on technology:
