The proposal to take away from Odessa, the sister city of Rostov-on-Don, the dismantled monument to Catherine II was announced today, December 15, at a regular meeting of the Legislative Assembly of the Rostov Region.

There will be many people who want to help with money in this matter, deputy Sergei Kosinov, who came up with such an initiative, expressed confidence, but it is important that the region also supports this decision.

Governor Vasily Golubev immediately supported this initiative.

  • When I received information about this proposal, I immediately said: “Yes, this is interesting, we are working on it.” I believe that this will be correct. Great Catherine is still great! After Peter, for sure – the second, – Vasily Golubev commented on the voiced idea.

Recall that at the end of November, the deputies of the Odessa City Council decided to dismantle the monuments to Russian statesmen, including Catherine II. The monument to Catherine II as the founder of Odessa and her associates Joseph de Ribas, Franz de Volan, Grigory Potemkin and Platon Zubov was installed in the city in 1900. In 1920, it was dismantled, but in 2007 it was restored again on Ekaterininskaya Square. The monument has been repeatedly attacked by vandals.
