The Brazilian Ministry of Health reported this Tuesday the registration of more than 500,000 cases and 75 deaths from dengue so far in 2024, a growth dynamic similar to that experienced by several Latin American countries last year, when more than 4.5 million people contracted the disease. In total, 512,353 cases have already been confirmed in these first six weeks of 2024, at a time of special concern due to the large crowds that are occurring in Brazil due to Carnival. In addition to the 75 deaths already confirmed, health authorities are investigating the causes of another 340 deaths. The figures are greatly higher than the cases that were confirmed last year during this same period, in which 128,842 people were diagnosed with the disease. Minas Gerais is the most affected state for now, with 171,000 cases, far ahead of Sao Paulo, with 83,600 infections, and Brasilia, with 64,400. Dengue is a disease transmitted by the ‘Aedes aegypti’ mosquito and symptoms begin to appear on the fourth day after the infected person was bitten by the insect.
