Cyclist Lars Daniels saved a horse from crashing into the peloton

During the well-known cycling race in Belgium, a horse suddenly appeared on the route and followed the competitors. One of them, the local Lars Danielssaw the horse at full speed and decided to move away from his colleagues to prevent the animal from colliding with the platoon. The well-known Under 20 event was held last week, but in the last few hours the video that recorded the event went viral.

You can see how the cyclists go through a hill and there the horse went after them. Daniels, who was one of the last participants in that group, saw the animal and decided to stop pedaling to slow it down. He took advantage of the downward slope to approach the horse and after signaling it to stop, he leaned in and tamed it as if he were an excellent rider.

They both stopped and the cyclist managed to save the horse. “I decided to go next to him to calm the horse. I grabbed the reins and slammed on the brakes as hard as I could to stop the horse. Soon a policeman came on the motorcycle to tell me that he would take care of it, because of course he had to move on as soon as possible to get me back. Apparently, the motorcyclist was already approaching at that moment,” Daniels said in testimonies that were published by Cycling Magazine.

The Belgian revealed that he had experience with horses. “When I was a kid I grew up in a riding school and today I still go show jumping and I have some friends who still ride often,” he said. His concern for the horse was also to prevent him from being run over by support vehicles.

Later, daniels echoed what happened and made a post on instagram with the video and wrote “horse race in progress.” In his profile on said social network you can see photos with some horses.

The incident occurred less than 10 kilometers from the finish line. By coming down from behind to help the horse, Daniels sacrificed any chance of winning. He finished in 93rd place for the day, in a group more than three minutes behind the leading pack. A few days later, in the final stage, he achieved a top ten. But at that moment the only thing that mattered to him was the horse’s well-being.

“But I didn’t compete for awards. Fortunately, it was all downhill there and thanks to the support cars I was able to quickly rejoin the peloton. So in the end I was able to travel with the rest of the group,” he explained.

The incident is similar to the 2023 Strade Bianche Donne. In the final kilometers there were moments of tension when a loose horse passed in front of Demi Vollering. The SD Worx driver was chasing Kristen Faulkner (Jayco AlUla), who was alone, with 17.5 km to go. As he took a quick left turn on a downhill slope, a horse made its way onto the road. The horse narrowly avoided the former winner of Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Vollering, 26, managed to stay away, but she screamed when the horse almost knocked her down.

In the Arden Challenger the Argentine was present Mateo Duque (18 years old), who managed to be top ten in two stages, as he finished sixth in the third and fourth rounds.
