Medvedev points out Alcaraz and Sinner as favorites after their elimination in Shanghai

Shanghai (China), Oct 8 (EFE).- The number three in world tennis, the Russian Daniil Medvedev, pointed out the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz and the Italian Jannik Sinner as great favorites to win the Shanghai Masters, a tournament of which it is current champion and from whom he was eliminated today in the third round.

“If we talk about state of form, at the moment Carlos is in, he is a player like Novak (Djokovic) or like Rafa (Nadal) before, every time he is in a tournament he is the main candidate for the title, or one of the two main ones along with Novak,” the tennis player explained in a press conference after losing against the American Sebastian Korda (7-6, 6-2).

Of Sinner, Medvedev praised his ability to “adapt” on a physical level, as he demonstrated by beating the Russian precisely to be crowned champion of the recently held Beijing Open.

Medvedev, who won the last edition of the tournament, 2019 – the following ones were canceled as a result of the Chinese Government’s ‘zero covid’ policy – was “very disappointed” by his elimination and attributed his defeat to a Better than expected performance from Korda in service.

“I doubt he’ll serve like that all the time (…). If he served like that all the time, he’d win more times. That’s tennis, he’s had a good day,” explained the Russian, who ended up breaking his racket after falling in the tiebreaker by the first set and also made his frustration evident at the end of the second set.

It should be noted that this was the first victory for ‘Sebi’ against a ‘top 5’, in a season also marked by injuries for the American.

In any case, Medvedev assured that being eliminated at the first opportunity in Shanghai will allow him to rest, with a view to feeling “100%” for the last events of the year.
