On this occasion, his response to the senator Maria Fernanda Cabal triggered a series of statements, especially from Miguel Uribe Turbay.

It all started when the senator Maria Fernanda Cabal He tweeted about security in the world and how Colombia is in second place in the 2023 World Organized Crime Index. In his message, he suggested that the insecurity situation in the country was due to the management of President Petro.

It should be noted that the Global Organized Crime Index is a report that highlights the breadth and sophistication of organized crime in the 193 countries that make up the United Nations Organization (UN). Compared to previous editions, this time financial crimes, illegal cyber activities, illicit trade, product counterfeiting and extortion were included as additional factors to consider.

The senator expressed: “Colombia, a world power of life? Gustavo Petro led Colombia to the worst insecurity; Today our country occupies second place in the 2023 World Organized Crime Index. “The peace of Santos was as false as the total peace of Petro.”

Gustavo Petro’s response was immediate, since the president argued that Colombia had occupied that dishonorable point in the World Organized Crime Index for several decades, covering all the governments that Senator María Fernanda Cabal had supported.

In the president’s message, he maintained that this situation was the result of the coordination of drug trafficking with political power in the country, which generated divided opinions.

In his words, Petro said: “My dear senator friend, we have had that dishonorable place for Colombia for several decades, which includes all the governments that you supported. It is the result of the articulation of drug trafficking to political power, so that you understand it better, it is the result of the role of the ñeñes and the calzones and others like that, in the political forces of which you were part. “We are undoing what they did in the past: they handed the country over to drug trafficking, we hand it over to the citizens.”

President Gustavo Petro’s accusations led to a response from María Fernanda Cabal, who again mentioned the scandals that have dotted her presidential campaign and the negative events that have occurred during her mandate since August 2022. The senator used these elements to counteract the Petro’s statements about Colombia’s alleged surrender to drug trafficking.

But Petro’s response to Senator Cabal did not go unnoticed and generated an exchange of public statements. In the midst of this debate, the opposition senator to the national government Miguel Uribe Turbay, member of the Democratic Center, decided to intervene in the conversation. In his message, the congressman launched a strong accusation against Gustavo Petro.

Uribe Turbay expressed: “Petro says so, the president who was elected with money from drug traffickers. The same one that offers them non-extradition, money laundering and total impunity. “Never before has there been such an obvious alliance of power with drug traffickers.”

This statement by the senator has intensified the political confrontation, since it suggests that Petro would have benefited from financing from drug trafficking in his presidential campaign. Furthermore, Uribe Turbay points out that Petro would be offering guarantees of impunity to people related to illicit activities, such as non-extradition and money laundering.
