The Kenyan Justice has accused several leaders of a Christian sect of murdering 191 children in a case against the group led by Paul Mackenzie, who caused the death of more than 430 of its members after ordering them to fast until death. Both Mackenzie and the other 29 accused acolytes have denied all charges before Judge Thande Mugure in the Malindi High Court, leaving another accused who has been deemed mentally unfit to answer the charges, according to Kenyan radio station Capital FM. In mid-January, nearly a hundred people, including Mackenzie, were charged with terrorism and murder for his role in a massacre considered “the worst security breach in the country’s history” by authorities. The sect’s top leaders urged adherents to practice fasting unto death under the promise that they will meet Jesus Christ in a new life. For months, authorities have carried out excavations and exhumations in large areas of forest in the Shakahola region (south), where they have found the bodies of some 430 victims.
