Dubai, Dec 4 (EFE).- The World Bank today presented two new platforms to reduce methane emissions into the atmosphere that contribute to global warming at the United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP28), in the Emirati city of Dubai.

The financial organization presented this Monday the Global Platform for Methane Reduction for Development (CH4D), a center for the reduction of methane in agriculture and waste, and the Global Partnership for Flaring and Methane Reduction (GFMR, for its acronym in English), which focuses on reducing methane leaks in the oil and gas sector.

The objective of both proposals is to strengthen alliances “to significantly reduce methane emissions throughout the energy value chain around the world,” according to an official statement, which framed these initiatives as part of its efforts and actions with countries such as Germany, Norway and the United States, as well as the private sector.

Methane is 80 times more dangerous than carbon dioxide (CO2) when it comes to warming the planet, making it one of the main drivers of climate change, but nevertheless, it is less known and the financing for its reduction is alarmingly low, representing less than 2% of global climate finance, according to the note.

These two platforms are added to the 15 national programs that the Bank will launch in the next 18 months with the intention of reducing up to 10 million tons of methane and reducing the “dangerous increase in global temperature and helping billions of people on the front lines of climate change.

In this way, the banking organization reinforces its climate action to reduce methane emissions, which represent around 19% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with the implementation of national programs to address emissions from the agriculture sector. , as in the case of rice, which with the right technology could be reduced by 40%.
