Washington, Oct 31 (EFE).- The president of the American union United Auto Workers (UAW), Shawn Fain, considered this Tuesday that the “mass dismissal” of General Motors (GM) workers in Brazil constitutes a violation of the law.

In a letter sent by Fain to the presidents of the Brazilian unions Força Sindical (FS) and General Motors Union Sao Caetano do Sul, released this Tuesday, the American union leader declared his solidarity with Brazilian employees.

“GM’s decision affects the job security of workers at GM plants in Sao José dos Campos, Sao Caetano do Sul and Mogi das Cruzes and violates the labor protection agreements signed with the unions,” he said.

“We also understand that GM is violating the law that requires companies to enter into negotiations with unions before carrying out mass layoffs,” added the UAW leader, who called the automaker’s actions “unacceptable.”

Fain said he supports the demands of Brazilian unions for Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to issue “a provisional measure that guarantees employment stability and the reduction of working hours without lowering wages.”

Fain’s letter comes after workers at three General Motors (GM) factories in São Paulo began an indefinite strike this Monday in protest of the latest layoffs of the American multinational in the country.

Fain sent the letter the same day the UAW reached a tentative agreement with GM in the United States that provides for 25% pay increases and other job improvements for the multinational’s American workers.
