Hotel rates will soar by almost 500% in Paris at the Olympics

Paris, Dec 27 (EFE).- Hotel rates will increase between 314% and 475% in the Paris region during the next 2024 Olympic Games compared to a year before, according to the Tourist Office of the French capital.

To verify this increase in prices, this organization compared in September the hotel offer that existed in July 2023, when the average cost was 169 euros per night, with the price of reservations at that time for July 2024, 699 euros on average.

This escalation is even more exacerbated if two-star hotels (366%) or three-star hotels (475%) are taken into account separately.

Availability to spend a single night during the Games is only 26% on average, when that percentage rises to 70% in the 17-day period between the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games.

In any case, the Tourist Office estimates that 90% of visitors will be French, so many will stay in the homes of family or friends.

Even so, it invites professionals to “limit the increase in rates during the Games and even before.”

The French consumer association Que Choisir pointed out in another study based on a representative sample of 80 establishments that, by the opening night of the sports competition, July 26, 50% of the hotels no longer have availability and the average price per night is 1,033 euros.

In its methodology, it compares the price of the reservation in 80 hotels chosen at random for the night of July 26 to 27, the date on which the Olympic event will begin, with the offer for two weeks before, in that same month of July 2024.

Current French law does not prevent hotels from raising their rates, nor does it prevent them from blocking rooms for reservations of several consecutive nights, a practice that up to 30% of establishments, Que Choisir notes, are saving for next summer. EFE
