Washington, Oct 20 (EFE).- The president of the United States, Joe Biden, said this Friday that he is confident that the Rafah crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip will open in the next 24 or 48 hours for the entry of twenty trucks with humanitarian aid for the Palestinian enclave.

This was stated at the beginning of a meeting at the White House with the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on the occasion of the Summit between the US and the European Union ( EU).

“I have the commitment of the Israelis and the Egyptian president that the crossing will open. I believe that between the next 24 and 48 hours the twenty trucks will enter,” Biden said.

The president stressed that “the road had to be repaved because it was in very bad condition.”

This same Friday, the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, urged from the Rafah crossing, the only access to the Strip that is not controlled by Israel, the opening of the crossing for the entry of trucks with humanitarian aid carrying days waiting at the border.

The Egyptian Government has reiterated that the crossing has been open on the Egyptian side, but on the Palestinian side it was closed because, on the one hand, it did not have permission from Israel and, on the other, the road was destroyed due to four Israeli bombings. .

After visiting Israel on Wednesday, Biden announced that he had agreed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to deliver aid through the crossing.

At least 4,137 Palestinians have been killed and more than 13,000 injured by Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip, de facto controlled by Hamas, in the war that broke out on October 7 between the Palestinian Islamist movement and the Jewish state.

The bombings are in retaliation for the surprise attack by the armed wing of Hamas that left more than 1,400 dead and some 4,300 injured in Israel, as well as more than 200 people kidnapped and taken to Gaza. EFE
