Mining accident in Marmato, Caldas, left one person injured and another dead

The inhabitants of Marmato, Caldas remain dismayed after it became known that, following a mining accident which occurred in a rural area of ​​the municipality, a worker lost his life. In the events, another person was also injured and is still recovering in a health center in the department.

According to the rescue agencies that arrived at the scene of the emergency, the accident took place in a sinkhole known as the Cañabravos. In that place, the deceased victim, 42 years old, suffered several rib fractures, as well as moderate trauma to the head.

The situation reached such a point that, according to the commander of the fire department, José Hernando Gallegothe man was taken to the nearest health center, but due to the severity of his injuries, the victim had to be transferred to a hospital in Manizales. Despite the efforts of doctors, the subject died hours later.

Likewise, authorities indicated that a 37-year-old miner was injured after the accident. The victim suffered a laceration on his forehead and suffered from multiple ailments, which is why he was transferred to a nearby healthcare center where doctors gave a reassurance report about his situation.

The rescue organizations emphasized that among the possible causes of the victims’ health problems would be intoxication and gas inhalation. The situation would have occurred before the miners could leave, a procedure that took about 20 minutes.

It should be noted that, by the end of October 2023, a few days before the mining accident in Marmato, Caldasthe authorities had already recorded a similar episode in Sutatausa, Cundinamarca.

The events were recorded on the afternoon of Sunday, October 29, 2023 in the Peñas de Boquerón village, in Sutatausa, about 90 kilometers from Bogotá. As noted by the Captain Álvaro Farfán, departmental delegate of the Cundinamarca Fire Department, The accident would have been caused, on that occasion, by an explosion in the sector.

“This afternoon a mining accident occurred in the Vereda Peñas de Boquerón, for which the area’s first response teams, mining personnel and some citizens of the community were activated. The Ubaté Firefighters arrived at the site to attend to the emergency,” said Farfán.

The uniformed officer stressed that the authorities, who arrived at the scene a few minutes later, managed to rescue alive two miners who were in the area and who suffered various health problems.

“Firefighters from the municipality of Ubaté, as well as relief personnel from the National Mining Agency, and the National Police, carry out the care process. They report that two miners who were trapped and have some burn injuries were fortunately rescued alive and are therefore being sent directly to the city of Bogotá,” said Farfán.

After the relief activities carried out by the authorities, three miners were injured and two rescued and were immediately sent to the Simón Bolívar – Cundinamarca Firefighters hospital.

Taking into account that an episode, in which a person’s life may be at risk, can be recorded at any time, from the Bogotá Health Secretariat They released some recommendations that aim to encourage citizens to influence first aid to help those who need it in the middle of an emergency.

  • Phone number you are calling from.
  • The event site: correct address and orientation so that the authorities can arrive quickly.
  • What happened, number of people affected, type of incidents and if there is anyone trained or providing help.

The organization emphasized that, once the call is made, the person who made it should not use the phone for the following minutes. This, in case the corresponding authorities must communicate again.
