The English coach Terry Venables, coach of FC Barcelona between 1984 and 1987 and former England coach, died this Sunday at the age of 80, the Barça club and the English Football Federation (FA) have confirmed. “We are all deeply saddened by the passing of former England manager Terry Venables, a true football icon. As one of the sport’s most charismatic figures, he leaves a legacy that lives on in the memories of many and enhanced the global reputation of English football. “Today our sport mourns the loss not only of a great character, but also of an innovative and forward-thinking coach who was an inspiration to a generation of English players and coaches,” the FA said. The London coach became a hero of the culé fans by winning the League of the 1984-85 season with Barça, after 11 seasons without doing so, in addition to the League Cup of the 1985-86 campaign, a season in the one in which the Catalans lost in the penalty shootout against Steaua Bucharest in the European Cup final in Seville. The one from Dagenham arrived at FC Barcelona with the task of replacing César Luis Menotti in the ‘post-Maradona’ era. “Venables opted for a very English-style game, with a classic 4-4-2 in which the defensive line stood out, with men like Gerardo, Migueli and Julio Alberto, and a very hard-working midfield with a prominent figure, the German Bernd Schuster. As the icing on the cake, an opportunistic striker like the Scotsman Steve Archibald,” recalls FC Barcelona. With two titles under his belt, Venables left Barça in September 1987, after a rather complicated start to the 1987-88 season, and was replaced by Luis Aragonés. In addition, Venables led the England team at Euro 1996, where they eliminated Javier Clemente’s Spain in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals. As a footballer, he is the only one to represent England in all categories, from children’s to senior level – he played two games in 1964 -. He also coached the Australian national team, Crystal Palace, Queens Park Rangers, Tottenham Hotspur, Portsmouth, Middlesbrough and Leeds United. As a player, he began his career in 1960 with Chelsea, before spells at Tottenham, Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace.
