The former president of the Government Felipe González warns that the Constitution is being attacked in a “merciless” way.

Felipe González He is not going to stop taking advantage of every forum in which he can raise his voice to cry out against the amnesty for those convicted and prosecuted in relation to the illegal referendum on October 1, 2017 in Catalonia, enabled by the party that he led for nearly 18 years. . This Tuesday he did it again, coinciding with news in the Congress of Deputies about the future law: Junts and ERC raised their demands. The legislature is barely two months old and to Pedro Sanchez most of it has already been broken to govern. González has been warning for some time about what it means to sit down to negotiate with the independence movement, even more so if it involves Carles Puigdemont.

The former president was the protagonist this Tuesday at the 10th Gregorio Peces-Barba Conference, sharing the stage with Eduardo Madina, Sánchez’s former rival. “The Constitution is being attacked in a ruthless and irrational way,” warned González, who called on society to “react.” In his opinion, Spain is under “threat” because “decisions are being made that have little to do” with the great challenges as a country. At this point, he regretted that PSOE and PP are not capable of reaching State agreements and wondered if it was a lack of “intelligence” or “will.”

“It is no more difficult to agree today than before,” said González, critical of the fact that acronyms that add up to more than 200 seats continue to “create walls and fictitious divisions.” Hours before these words, a truce occurred, nothing less than for a constitutional reform on account of article 49, to eliminate the term “disabled” and replace it with “people with disabilities”. Vox abstained. The process is already underway in the Congress of Deputies.

But González talks about other matters. He advocates that Sánchez not depend on peripheral forces and can rely on the main opposition party to reach consensus and carry out the master measures of the mandate, such as social shields or successive general budgets. Otherwise, the former president noted, he will command “the blackmail of minorities.” The historical socialist does not locate the problem so much in those minorities, “who shout or who want to undo the system”, as “in those who have a majority and give in”, in a clear allusion to the PSOE.

Among those attending the event, focused on the 45th anniversary of the Magna Carta, were the presidents of Congress, Francina Armengoland the Senate, Pedro Rollanbut no less notable was the attendance of the former president of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) Carlos Lesmes or the judges Pablo Llarenawho has worked in recent years to hold Puigdemont accountable before the Supreme Court, and Manuel Marchenapresident of the court that handed down the sentence processes. González had very complimentary words precisely for the judges and prosecutors who investigated this case “in an impeccable manner.”

The former president did not let the plenary session pass for debate and voting last Wednesday of the Government anti-crisis decrees, not only because of the “spectacle” seen – as he described it – but also because of the formula used by the Government to carry out these initiatives: “I will rebel against all the buses that are presented, keeping us in an emergency situation indefinitely. “How long is an emergency situation?”
