CEP promotes in the European Parliament to include police officers as a risky profession and regrets the vote against PSOE

The Spanish Police Confederation (CEP) regretted this Thursday the vote against the PSOE of a proposal that was registered in December 2023 before the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament to recognize the police profession as risky. The CEP petition urged the urgent consideration of this proposal due to the “little legal protection offered by the majority of Member States to their agents,” the statement said, adding that “every day that passes without appropriate legal support, more police officers are injured, die in the line of duty or commit suicide, conditioned by the pressure of their work. Likewise, they recalled that “if those in charge of enforcing the Law and guaranteeing the fundamental rights of EU citizens do not have their own protected, the founding principles of the Union are violated.” In this sense, CEP has stressed that, despite the vote against PSOE, the initiative will go ahead due to the support of the PP, the European Conservatives (ECR) and Renew, so it will be submitted to debate and vote in a future meeting of the Petitions Committee, on March 19, before the current legislature ends and the European Parliament is renewed. Therefore, for CEP the refusal of the PSOE to support this analysis is “especially painful and unfair” and “deepens the abyss that already exists between the Ministry of the Interior” and the national police and civil guards as a whole. In line, the Confederation has called on the PSOE to amend and rectify its position on March 19, supporting its claim so that it can be processed in the European Parliament “as proof of support for the sacrificial and risky work” that they carry out. the police and civil guards.
