The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that Brussels would not have taken on obligations to help Ukraine join the union if not for the Ukrainian conflict.

According to him, statements about Kiev’s membership in the European Union are a serious political commitment, since Brussels assured Ukraine that it will do everything possible to help it fulfill all the conditions for transition to membership in the community.

At the same time, in an interview with the RNE radio station, Borrell pointed out the following: “Surely, they were said because there is a war, and without it we would not have said this, we would not have made this commitment, but we did it.”

Meanwhile, the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, said that Ukraine could join the EU in 2030 if both sides do their homework. He added that Kyiv will need to undergo preparations to join the bloc.
